It can be overwhelming getting your photo taken. I’ve seen it so many times with people getting headshots, where they are so nervous, don’t know how to place their arms or if they should wear their jacket. I get it. Does it look weird? Is my hair okay? I go through it, too.
Attire
What you wear doesn’t just matter for photos. It also influences how you feel. It’s important to wear clothes that are:
- comfortable
- weather appropriate
- fitting to your personality
- in the style you’d like (is this meant to be casual, professional, or fancy?)
- feel good!
I’d also stick with largely solid colors, depending on the setting (we all know flannel is perfect for fall or holiday photos). Busy patterns can be worn under a jacket, but too much pattern can be distracting in the final photo. The goal is for YOU to stand out in your photos – not your clothes.
Several years ago, a friend showed me how to find the best clothing and jewelry colors for my skin, eye, and hair colors. I’m pale and have dark hair, so I’m a winter palette. Burgundy, dark blue, and white gold are good choices to complement my tone. There’s a good guide here.
Accessories
Beyond your attire, consider bringing items that showcase your favorite hobbies or sports. Consider things you enjoy and what your friends know you for or what you want to feature.
- Do you love the Miami Dolphins?
- Does one of your children play soccer?
- Do you participate in any sports as a family?
Other Supplies
You never know what might come up on a shoot. Bringing some necessities will ensure you feel comfortable and confident.
- mirror
- makeup
- chapstick or lipstick
- brush or comb
- hair ties or clips
- lint roller
- clothes pins or fabric tape
Be prepared to pose!
For shorter shoots, there’s 30 minutes to an hour of smiling and moving to new spots. During the photo shoot, you’ll stand facing different ways and be arranged in different ways.
